In 1976-1991 in the West Bohemian region 2,384 cases of viral hepatitis B were notified. The morbidity declined gradually from 23.0 to 5.8/100,000 population. During the investigation period a marked decline in the number of nosocomial and occupational infections occurred. The specific morbidity declined significantly, in particular in more advanced age groups; it still remains highest in the age bracket from 15-24 years. The centre of gravity of the problem as regards transmission of the infection shifted beyond the health services; a problem which persists is sexual transmission. The authors discuss possibilities how to eliminate the infection in this country. Before possibly regular immunization is introduced, immunization of risk groups should be implemented.
