Characterization of HBV viral forms in single hepatocytes from HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B demonstrates that during nucleos(t)ide analogue treatment, (1) slow decay of infected hepatocytes requires >100 years of therapy to eradicate HBV, and (2) HBV transcriptional silencing occurs.
