Highlights • PEGylated Au NPs were prepared by cathode sputtering into a liquid medium. • Au NPs were stable during aging, after thermal stressing and even autoclaving. • Au NPs were subjected to cytotoxic and antiviral testing. • Au NPs displayed cytocompatibility with both fibroblasts and osteoblasts. • Prepared Au NPs are safe for potential application in biomedicine.
